Recent Highlights

Griff LinC Research Group

Drs. Jennifer Mann and Alison Turner traveled to Australia to collaborate with Dr. Jennifer Alford of Griffith University, a leading scholar in critical literacy and adolescent multilingual learners. Mann and Turner first shared their work with faculty and colleagues at Griffith University in Brisbane, which sparked some great conversations and brainstorming about the project and where to take it next. The team brought together expertise in educational research, critical literacy, and multilingual learners.

CIDR team at ALEA conference

Following research and brainstorming sessions with Dr. Alford and her colleagues, the team traveled to Fremantle to present at the Australian Literacy Educators’ Association (ALEA) National Conference.
Their session, “Illuminating the Margins: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Refugee-Background Students’ Schooling Experiences,” examined the experiences of late-arriving refugee-background students in U.S. high schools and the role of teacher practices in fostering belonging. The findings presented at ALEA provide foundational data for the team’s CIDR project.
